Section 2. History of Computing & AI – Activity 2: What is AI?
In this section, we will discuss the early and recent history in AI technology development. We will also cover some background on semiconductors, CPU's, GPU's and other technology that make AI possible. We will also discuss the basics of AI model training, and go through some of today's most popular AI technologies.

Section 3. How is AI used in different applications? – Activity 3: Aligning real world AI with AI4K12
In this section, we will discuss several real world examples of AI robotics, and go through the exercise of aligning AI concepts with the AI4K12 5 Big Ideas in AI.

Section 4. AI in action: Teachable Machine – Activity 4: Training and testing an AI model
In this section, we will conduct a browser based activity, and will go through all the steps of developing training data, uploading it to a Google server, and training a real AI model, for object detection. We will then test our resulting model with different objects and record our results, to determine if the model is well-built and if there are any potential drawbacks or ways to improve the system.

About Lesson

In this exercise we will be thinking about the various implications of different AI technologies, with respect to the 5 Big Ideas in AI.

  1. See the videos about the Cozmo Robot as well as special Amazon Alexa features.

    Alexa Video

  2. Visit the AI4K12 site (http://www.ai4k12.org), and look over the 5 Big Ideas in AI. Either create a new Miro board, or a PPT or sheet with the following categories for discussion, about how these technologies align with different AI4K12 core concepts:
AI4K12 Concept Cozmo Video Alexa Video
1. Perception
2. Representation & Reasoning
3. Learning
4. Natural Interaction
5. Societal Impact
  1. Think about the various ways that both AI technologies align with each of the core 5 Big Ideas. Here are some sample ideas (also shown in the class slides / video).  What are the pros and cons of the various technologies within each category?

Perception: Cozmo and Alexa use sensors, including microphones and cameras to interact with users.

Learning & Prediction: Cozmo and Alexa use constant new information and they apply this knowledge to new situations, including learning language and gestures.

Choices / Reasoning: Cozmo and Alexa interact with their environments and and make choices about how to respond, based on context (like whispering to Alexa, or Cozmo recognizing the end of a table, avoiding a fall)

Natural Interaction: Alexa devices are now connected to many household appliances and devices and responds in a soothing, natural voice; Cozmo is capable of responding with facial expressions and movements that show a response (including something similar to emotion).

Societal Impact: Having a digital interaction that is human-like is important for people to feel comfortable with technology, and taking care of reminders and tasks helps make people’s live easier and more efficient. What are some possible negative implications?  Cultural/language biases?  Eavesdropping?
